Just my view but I think mind mapping works best with paper and coloured pens/pencils because of the action of creating the images by hand creates a stronger link in your mind.
I’m not saying software doesn’t work, it certainly helps to distribute it but I think Tony Buzan’s approach really does work best. Just my thoughts.

I have one of Buzan’s books, just never seem to have the time to read it properly (like a lot of other books!).
Like a lot of these things, specifically GTD, etc., I to think starting on paper is the way to go, moving on to software solutions later if appropriate.

“diff’rent strokes” as they say, on account of how differently different people think… My eraser doesn’t do as well erasing colored pencil branches off of the notebook paper when I want to move them to a different part of my map as my delete key & drag-n-drop capabilities in the software.
